HES Investment Club

During my exchange at McGill University, I started working on a proposal to launch an investment club within my university "School of Economics and Management / HES Amsterdam". The McGill Investment Club was my inspiration and I believed that we missed an initiative like that.

After submitting the proposal to the program manager of my major, "International Business and Management", I rapidly got the "go" to start and work on the "HES Investment Club". My first item on my "to-do" list was getting someone else involved, as I might be going abroad for my internship in February, a second boardmember at the home university was something that needed to be. To my delight my first choice, Tobias de Koning, accepted my request and became very involved from the get-go. The team was formed.

Three months later, I proudly announce that our first meeting attracted almost 60 people. The kick-off of our trading competition was last Monday (22 November 2010) and within 4 days our platform facilitated trading in shares and currencies for almost € 4 million.

With more than 80 registered members we believe that our club will become a success and will grow to more than 100 members during the coming semester.

With the sophomore year of my studies finished, just waiting on the results of the finals, my junior year will commence in January 2010. During the coming semester I will be on exchange at the Desautels Faculty of Management of McGill University in Montréal, Quebec, Canada.

I will be following five courses, being: Investment Management, Capital Markets and Institutions, Sales Management, Organizational Policy, and Approached to International Political Economy. The first four courses are directly related to my studies while the latter is an extra course which I chose to acquire more knowledge on the political side of economics.

This website (thijsluijf.nl) is purely intended to present a professional portfolio of my, so my experiences and adventures in Montréal will be available for everyone to read on my blog "Montréal, Je t'aime".

With regards,

This week I received a letter from the Hogeschool van Amsterdam to congratulate me on passing the foundation year of my studies and to inform me that I could pick up my Propedeutic Certificate, which is an official certificate in the Netherlands - but also in Germany and in Scandinavian countries - awarded to students who passed the foundation year of their studies. Together with the certificate itself, I received an official list of result achieved during the foundation year of International Business and Management.

You will be able to find the Propedeutic Certificate and the list of results as attachment to this message. Because the extra course I followed was not officially part of the foundation year curriculum, it is not included on the official papers of the Propedeutic Certificate.

Kind regards,

During the second semester of my first year as an International Business and Management student, the course "YoungEnterprise" was my favourate course. During the YoungEnterprise project we had to start, run, and liquidate a real company. Part of the course was the opportunity to take an official test, administered by the University of Cambridge, which would upon passing grant the student with an official certificate of the Universite of Cambridge together with the "Junior Achievement Young Enterprise" foundation.

On the 3th of March 2009 the exam had taken place and little over a week ago the result came in, I passed the exam and the certificate was on the way. Now a week later the certificate arrived, it can be found as an attachment.

Kind regards,

McGill University

After the good news that I passed the foundation year of my study, and me thus receiving my Propedeutic certificate, with an average of 7.8 out of 10. Today I've received even better news, the study abroad ranking results. The study abroad ranking is the way for my university to determine which student can go to which university during his or her exchange semester.
Normally a student is only allowed to enter the ranking procedure after obtaining 60 ECTS in the first year and 25 ECTS in the second year, but as a student that started in January I could enter after I obtained 60 ECTS during the first year.

Because of this rule I could already enter the ranking procedure and so I did, having McGill University as my only university I really wanted to go to during my exchange I only ranked for McGill. So today I received the news that my ranking was high enough to go the McGill University during the spring semester of 2010.
In the mean time I am obliged to obtain at least 40 ECTS during the current and coming semester, before I am allowed to go on exchange, but that won't be a problem as far as I am concerned. And I still have to apply to McGill but also that will be dealt with when time comes to do so.

So from January 2010 this portfolio-website will be gaining another purpose. To keep my family, friends and possible future employers informed I will be blogging on this website aswell.
Until then, I will be updating the results with every grade or report that is written by me, or a group which I participated in. And you can now contact me using the contact me page.

Kind regards,

Thijs Luijf
